Vice President of Quality at Millennium Physician Group

“A lot of pharmacists are experts on the patient care front. What surprised me the most about working with Stellus Rx is just how experienced they are on the data and the targeting side. They’re very comfortable and familiar with working with payer data and even with the payers themselves.” That’s high praise coming from Brittany Orr, Vice President of Quality for Millennium Physician Group.
As one of the largest physician-led groups and a leader in value-based care, performance clearly matters at Millennium. It’s why Brittany joined Millennium in 2021—to drive contract performance, with a specific focus on medication-related performance measures. It’s why Millennium staffed a team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians … and subsequently why the group turned to Stellus Rx as a force multiplier for the quality team.
As Brittany described, “It feels like Stellus Rx is part of our team. More than making phone calls for us, they’re helping us perform better on our contracts.”
In this interview with Brittany, we explore how Millennium continues to grow and succeed in value-based care through the group’s investment in the right expertise with the right return on investment.
What can you share briefly about Millennium Physician Group and why people choose the practice?
Brittany Orr: The first thing I’d say is that so many of our patients choose Millennium Physician Group because of the relationships they have with their physicians or advanced providers. That’s why they come to us, and they stay because of how comprehensively we take care of them.
Our core is primary care services, delivered by our 900 physicians and advanced providers across 200 locations in Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Georgia. But we continue to grow our wrap-around services as well—things like walk-in clinics, multispecialty care, home health, physical therapy, lab and imaging.
And so, I think what patients see in Millennium is a medical group that prides itself on delivering personal care at scale. What healthcare experts see in Millennium is a group that’s leading the way in value-based care delivery and performance, while still always prioritizing the patient experience.
How would you describe Millennium’s approach to performance, especially as you’ve grown the organization to such a significant size?
Brittany Orr: We invest a lot in tools and resources that enable our physicians and advanced providers to take care of patients with that comprehensive, relationship-centered way I mentioned. Like so many other leading healthcare organizations, Millennium is working to achieve the quadruple aim: Improved outcomes, improved patient experience, improved provider satisfaction and reduced costs.
Many times, our efforts toward that come in the form of technology or data and reporting. But we also invest in internal wrap-around services and have made decisions to bring on strategic, clinical partners that share our vision for what patient care should be … and how to deliver that care in ways that empower all our physicians and advanced practitioners. Our partnership with Stellus Rx is a prime example of that.
In Medicare Advantage contracts, medication adherence performance has such an outsized impact. As a performance-minded organization, how has Millennium worked to turn adherence into an area of excellence?
Brittany Orr: This is near and dear to my heart because I serve Millennium as the VP of Quality. But I’m also a clinical pharmacist, and I joined Millennium in 2021 with the intention of addressing the medication-related quality measures. Managing our high-cost drug utilization and decreasing medication-related problems in our value-based patients are crucial to value-based care performance. Medication adherence lies at the heart of it all.
So, my first initiative at Millennium was to work with our leadership to develop a medication adherence program with a small in-house team. And it looked a lot like what our program with Stellus Rx looks like today, just at a reduced scale.
Stellus Rx has really given us the opportunity to expand our bandwidth and to target patients more proactively instead of reactively. We’re seeing better performance on medication adherence measures as a result. More importantly, we’ve been able to expand our work over time to the point where Stellus Rx is now supporting all our Florida contracts and a couple of our Texas-based contracts. That’s not something we could have done nearly as easily, quickly or cost-effectively if we had continued to use only in-house resources.
Beyond the additional horsepower from Stellus Rx’s clinical pharmacists, are there any other aspects of the partnership that have surprised you?
Brittany Orr: Stellus Rx has really come to the table with a certain degree of expertise that exceeded my expectations. A lot of pharmacists are experts in patient care. They know how to have conversations with patients about their medications and their health.
But what surprised me the most about working with Stellus Rx is just how experienced they are on the data and the targeting side. They’re very comfortable and familiar with working with payer data and even with the payers themselves.
So the pharmacists at Stellus Rx aren’t just on the front line, helping us improve our bandwidth by helping patients with their medications. They’re also helping uncover data discrepancies, providing feedback to our payers, and working very collaboratively with me as a leader and our payers on my behalf. And that’s the part that makes it feel like Stellus Rx is part of our team. More than making phone calls for us, they’re helping us perform better on our contracts.
